By: Lalaine B. Coronel

Singing has been part of every Filipino's life. It’s like, we cannot live without music, especially karaoke, Pinoy’s favorite part in every celebration like birthdays, and it’s not even new because even foreign countries are now recognizing Pinoy’s talent in singing.

There are a huge number of bands and singers here in the Philippines that are now successful and have a spotlight but for now, let’s not just talk about songs with kilig or romance. Let me introduce to you a few songs that talk about life and everyone can relate to especially Pinoys.

1. Nanlaban

Singer: BANDIDO

Bandido is a Filipino local band that speaks about the truth Filipinos face every day. The band speaks about it in carefully woven tunes and words. They sing of financial difficulties, taboos, and political issues. If we can’t scream these problems to the world without being mistaken as entitled brats, we might as well sing it.

The fear of living in an increasingly violent society is explored in "Nanlaban." The song is about a guy who is afraid of being attacked and suspected of being a drug user because of his appearance. It aims to combat the social stigma that having long hair, tattoos, or ear piercings makes you a criminal.

2. Sisikat ka Iha

Singer: Bita and the Botflies

Bita and the Botflies was an indie band formed in 2016 with its original name, Adobo Toothpaste.

If you listen to their songs for the first time, you’ll be hooked with their aesthetically-pleasing music and music videos until you notice the lyrics. It's kind of creepy but tells about real-life situations, specifically women.

"Sisikat Ka Iha," which is told from the perspective of a predator posing as an agent to stress the objectification of women, according to the band. It also looks at how young girls are exploited and how women have a "shelf life" under masculine scrutiny.

3. Unemployed

SInger: BANDIDO

The song “Unemployed” is about a man who has a working-student girlfriend and breadwinner of her family who eventually got unemployed because of the end of contract on work. Until the girl decided to give up applying on various jobs here in the country, quit school, and go abroad to work or basically, become an OFW.

4. Bugtong

Singer: Gloc 9 ft. Yeng Constantino

We all know who Gloc 9 is. One of the famous and award-winning rappers in the Philippines who is also known for his Filipino life song compositions.

“Bugtong” is a rap song that formed as bugtong or riddle. From the lyrics, pwedeng tao, pwedeng hayop, sino kaya ang tinutukoy ko. He also mentioned on his song, hindi yata dapat ginawa ‘to parang delikado, ang mahalaga’y maririnig ng mga tao. The song is about the politicians who are only present when it’s election and campaign season and turned blind eye on marginalized after.

5. Hiwaga

Singer: Syd Hartha

Syd Hartha is a 21-year old famous Filipino YouTuber and acoustic musician.

Her songs are popular in Spotify and one of these is the song, “Hiwaga” that talks about her self-awakening.

“Basically, the love you have for yourself reflects to everyone and everything around you,” the critically acclaimed musician explains.
“There was a time in my life where I felt so stuck and started to question my existence and the reason for everything. What inspired me to write this song is my awakening to the fact that I was given this life for a reason. I want to heal so I can be the best version of myself for everyone around me and I want to inspire people to do the same.”

"Hiwaga" was written by Syd from a point of newfound perspective and enthralling insight, as a reminder that no matter who you are or what you're going through, you can still be a part of a greater change.

There are many songs that are unheard of, made by our local singers and bands. Interact and wait for upcoming bands and singers that will voice out every unheard Filipino.
